ENGINEERING BASICS

What Is a Magnetic Connector?

A magnetic connector is a detachable electrical interconnect that uses magnets to assist alignment and retention between two mating components.

In magnetic pogo pin connector designs, spring-loaded contacts create the electrical path for power, charging, signal or data, while the magnetic structure helps guide and retain the mating interface.

Unlike many fixed connector structures, a magnetic interface allows quick connection and separation while reducing the need for precise manual alignment during repeated mating.

For OEM and ODM projects, pin count, contact layout, magnetic force, housing dimensions, mounting structure and PCB, FPC or wire termination can be customized around the device requirements.

Electrical Interface Contacts can be assigned for power, charging, signal and selected data requirements.
Magnetic Mating Magnets assist capture, alignment and retention between the mating connector sides.
Custom Mechanical Design Dimensions, housing, mounting and termination can be adapted to the available device space.

ENGINEERING & MANUFACTURING

Why Engineers Work with CTP

Custom magnetic connector development involves electrical, magnetic, mechanical and manufacturing requirements. Our engineering process reviews these conditions together before moving from concept to sample and production.

01

Engineering Review

We review the application, electrical requirements, available space, mating direction and installation conditions before defining the connector structure.

02

Custom Structure Development

Pin count, contact layout, housing dimensions, magnetic arrangement and PCB, FPC or wire termination can be adjusted around the device requirements.

03

Prototype & Validation

Samples are developed against the approved design and reviewed for electrical, mechanical and project-specific validation requirements.

04

Production Support

After sample approval, the project moves into manufacturing, assembly and inspection based on the confirmed drawing and acceptance requirements.

ENGINEERING INFORMATION

How to Specify a Custom Magnetic Connector

Share the following information when available. If some parameters are not yet defined, our engineering team can review them together with your application.

01

Pin Count

Define the required number of power, ground, signal and data contacts.

02

Current & Voltage

Provide system voltage, operating current and peak current when known.

03

Pin Assignment

Define how the contacts will be used for power, ground, signal or data.

04

Installation Space

Share available PCB space, housing dimensions and mating area limitations.

05

Magnetic Force

Define the required holding force and expected breakaway behavior.

06

Mounting Method

Select PCB, FPC, wire, cable or another project-specific termination method.

07

Operating Environment

Consider waterproofing, temperature, corrosion and other operating conditions.

08

Project Quantity

Share prototype demand and estimated production volume when available.

CUSTOM DEVELOPMENT

Magnetic Connector Development Process

Custom projects move from requirement review through engineering definition, sample validation and approved mass production.

01

Submit Requirements

Send drawings, specifications, application details or the requirements currently available.

02

Engineering Review

Review pin layout, current, magnetic force, dimensions, mounting and mating structure.

03

Prototype & Testing

Samples are developed and verified against the confirmed project requirements.

04

Mass Production

Production, assembly and inspection proceed after sample approval.

PRODUCT SELECTION

Magnetic Connector vs Magnetic Cable vs Pogo Pin Connector

These products may use similar spring-loaded contact technology, but they serve different integration requirements.

Magnetic Connector

A removable electrical mating interface that combines magnetic alignment or retention with electrical contacts between two device sides.

Magnetic Cable Assembly

A finished cable assembly that integrates the magnetic mating interface with cable and opposite-end termination.

FAQ

Magnetic Connector FAQ

What information is required for a custom magnetic connector?
Send the application, available dimensions, pin requirements, current, voltage, mounting method and expected quantity when available. A drawing is helpful but is not required for the first review.
Can magnetic connectors transmit both power and data?
Yes. Contacts can be assigned for power, ground, signal and selected data requirements according to the approved connector design.
Can magnetic force be customized?
Yes. Magnetic holding and breakaway behavior can be evaluated through magnet size, grade, quantity, arrangement and mechanical structure.
Can you develop waterproof magnetic connector structures?
Waterproof structures can be evaluated according to project requirements. Final protection performance depends on both the connector design and the device sealing structure.
Can dimensions and pin layouts be customized?
Yes. Pin count, contact spacing, housing dimensions, magnetic structure and PCB, FPC or wire termination can be customized around the device design.
How do magnetic connectors work?
Magnets assist alignment and retention, while mechanical features position the mating parts and spring-loaded contacts create the electrical connection.
What is the difference between a magnetic connector and a magnetic cable?
A magnetic connector refers to the removable mating interface. A magnetic cable assembly integrates that magnetic interface with cable and an opposite-end termination.
Can magnetic connectors use PCB, FPC or wire termination?
Yes. PCB, FPC, wire and cable termination structures can be evaluated according to the electrical, mechanical and production requirements of the project.
