Product Engineering Details

Technical Specifications, Structure and Integration

Review the product-specific description, technical parameters, contact arrangement, mechanical structure and project conditions below.

Engineering Summary

This 2-pin magnetic pogo connector combines a single-row spring-contact interface with dual side mounting ears for mechanical installation. The structure is intended for removable device interfaces where the connector body requires defined attachment points to a housing, bracket or internal mechanical structure.

The mounting ears provide mechanical attachment points, the magnetic elements assist capture and retention during mating, and the spring-loaded contacts provide electrical contact with controlled Z-axis compliance. Final seating, alignment and positional tolerance should be established by the approved mechanical interface rather than by magnetic force or pogo-pin compression alone.

Product Architecture

2-Pin Single-Row Contact Interface

The connector uses two spring-loaded contact positions arranged in a single row. The electrical function of each contact is not defined by pin count alone and should be assigned through the customer-approved pin map.

Dual Mounting Ear Structure

A mounting ear is integrated at each side of the connector housing, with one visible through hole per ear. These features allow the connector body to be mechanically attached independently from the spring-contact interface.

Hole diameter, center distance, fastener type, datum function and mounting tolerance must be confirmed from the approved mechanical drawing.

How This Interface Works

The connector architecture separates magnetic, mechanical and electrical functions:

  • Magnetic elements: assist capture and retention during mating.
  • Mounting ears and device mechanics: support installation, final seating and the defined mechanical relationship to the product housing.
  • Spring-loaded contacts: provide electrical contact and controlled compliance along the contact axis.

Magnetic capture should not be treated as confirmation of final mechanical seating or valid electrical connection. These conditions must be established through the complete device interface.

Mechanical Integration of the Mounting Ears

The dual-ear structure can be useful when the connector needs a defined mechanical attachment to the device rather than relying only on adhesive, housing capture or contact compression.

The visible through holes may be incorporated into a screw, pin, rivet or other mechanical fastening strategy depending on the approved design. Their exact function should be defined before enclosure or PCB tooling is released.

Mounting Information to Review

  • Overall connector length, width and height
  • Mounting-hole diameter
  • Hole-to-hole center distance
  • Required fastener or locating-pin structure
  • Housing datum surfaces
  • Permitted X/Y/Z tolerance
  • Mating direction and separation direction
  • Available enclosure and internal installation space

Mounting Holes and Datum Strategy

The presence of mounting holes does not by itself establish precision positioning. If the holes are intended to act as locating datums, their diameter, positional tolerance, mating hardware and relationship to the connector contact interface should be specified on the approved mechanical drawing.

A robust design should define which features control final X/Y position, Z seating and rotational orientation rather than assigning these functions to magnetic attraction or pogo-pin compression.

Working Stroke and Contact Compliance

The spring-loaded contacts should operate within the working stroke defined by the approved connector drawing. Working stroke is different from total available travel and should be selected together with enclosure stack-up and mating tolerance.

The pogo pins should provide controlled electrical-contact compliance and should not be used as the final structural stop for the mating assembly.

Electrical and Pin Map Design

A 2-pin connector does not automatically define a charging interface. The two contacts may be assigned according to the electrical architecture of the customer device, and the final functions should be documented in the approved pin map.

Current Capability

Current capability should be evaluated across the complete conductive path:

Source → PCB / cable → termination → pogo pin → contact interface → target → load.

Contact diameter alone is not sufficient to establish a current rating. Termination resistance, conductor geometry, mating resistance and temperature rise should be reviewed for the complete interface.

Magnetic Capture and Retention

Magnetic elements positioned around the contact interface assist the mating process by providing capture and retention. Magnetic requirements should be selected according to device use conditions rather than simply maximizing magnetic force.

Capture force, retention force, separation force and peel force can represent different mechanical requirements and should be evaluated independently when relevant to the project.

Application Fit

This architecture can be evaluated for removable electrical interfaces where the connector body needs two mechanical attachment points around the contact area. The dual mounting ears can support integration into a housing, bracket or other defined mechanical structure.

Final application suitability depends on installation space, mounting geometry, pin assignment, electrical conditions, mating tolerance, magnetic behavior and environmental requirements.

Environmental Considerations

The visible connector structure does not establish an IP rating or waterproof performance. If environmental sealing is required, the connector interface, mounting holes, housing, gasket strategy and completed enclosure should be evaluated as one assembly.

Salt-spray performance, corrosion requirements, operating temperature and environmental ratings should only be published when supported by an approved specification or validation data.

Customization Options

CTP can review project-specific requirements around connector dimensions, mounting-ear geometry, hole position, contact assignment, mating structure, electrical conditions and magnetic behavior.

Final connector configuration should be released through an approved 2D drawing and, where required, a 3D mechanical model.

FAQ

What are the two side mounting ears used for?

They provide mechanical attachment points for integrating the connector housing into the device. The final fastening method and hole dimensions should be defined by the approved mechanical drawing.

Are the mounting holes precision locating holes?

Not necessarily. Their locating function depends on the mechanical design, hole tolerance, mating hardware and datum strategy. The presence of through holes alone does not establish precision positioning.

Does this 2-pin connector have to be used for charging?

No. Pin count does not define electrical function. The two contacts should be assigned according to the approved customer pin map.

What current can this 2-pin magnetic connector carry?

Current capability is project-specific and should be evaluated across the complete conductive path, including the termination, spring contacts, mating interface and customer-side conductors.

Do the magnets control final connector alignment?

The magnets assist capture and retention. Final alignment and seating should be controlled by the mechanical features and datum strategy of the completed device interface.

Can the mounting-hole dimensions be customized?

Mounting-ear geometry and hole dimensions can be reviewed as part of a custom connector project, subject to mechanical feasibility and the approved drawing.

Is this connector waterproof?

No environmental rating should be inferred from the visible connector geometry alone. Waterproof or IP performance must be defined and validated at the completed assembly level.

What information is required for an engineering review?

Provide the available installation space, mounting dimensions, pin map, voltage, current, working stroke, mating tolerance, magnetic requirements, operating environment, termination requirement and available 2D or 3D drawings.
