Three Defined Electrical Paths
A 3 Pin cable is the appropriate starting point when the complete interface uses three contacts, such as two primary paths plus one customer-defined detection, identification, control or signal path.

A 4 Pin cable is the appropriate starting point when four independent paths are required by the circuit, including a documented fourth signal, reference, control or other electrical function.

The phrase “power and data” does not define the number of signal paths, protocol, reference structure or cable design. Break the requirement into the following questions.
State whether the extra path is used for detection, identification, control, communication or another customer-defined electrical signal.
Count each independent signal and its required reference or return path instead of assuming one “data” label equals one contact.
Provide the protocol or signal specification. A USB-shaped cable end does not by itself define the wiring or communication function.
Explain the required communication direction and the device state in which the signal is active.
Identify the associated return, reference or ground structure required by the complete circuit.
Cable length, conductor arrangement, termination and environmental conditions should be reviewed with the complete signal requirement.
A contact assignment is complete only when the magnetic contact, cable conductor, source-side termination and device-side connection all use the same definition.

The fourth contact should solve a defined electrical requirement rather than simply make the cable appear more versatile.
The system may require two different auxiliary states that cannot share the same conductive path.
The complete signal circuit may require an additional independently defined reference or return connection.
A project may require two separate signal contacts in addition to its primary conductive paths. The exact signal type still requires confirmation.
Identification and control may need independent contacts when they perform different circuit functions.
A fourth position may be used for a defined test or service function when it is included in the PCB and acceptance documents.
A reserved position may be considered when its future role is already reflected in the electrical, PCB and mechanical design.
A 4 Pin cable is not automatically more capable. Use three contacts when the complete circuit genuinely requires only three conductive paths.
The two primary contacts plus one detection, identification, control or signal contact complete the system requirement.
There is no PCB connection, wire assignment or device function prepared for a fourth contact.
Adding another contact may affect connector width, pitch, housing size and cable outlet structure.
The source-side termination and cable wiring already define a complete three-conductor system.
A fourth contact should not be added without a real device-side electrical destination.
The product may need to remain compatible with an established three-contact dock, device or accessory.
A correct cable requires more than one connector drawing. Every project document should use the same contact IDs, viewing direction and electrical assignment.
Show P1 through P3 or P4 from a clearly stated male-side or female-side viewing direction.
Connect each magnetic contact ID to a defined conductor, core ID or wire reference.
Show where each cable conductor terminates at the plug, PCB, bare wire or custom interface.
Match each magnetic contact to its device-side pad, circuit node or connector position.
Define how continuity, polarity and each auxiliary or signal function will be verified.
