“Data Cable” Is Not a Complete Engineering Specification

The phrase “power and data” does not define the number of signal paths, protocol, reference structure or cable design. Break the requirement into the following questions.

Do not rely only on cable color. Use consistent contact IDs and state the drawing viewing direction to prevent mirrored assignments between the male side, female side and PCB drawing.

What Can Justify Moving from 3 Pin to 4 Pin?

The fourth contact should solve a defined electrical requirement rather than simply make the cable appear more versatile.
