Engineering Summary

This 3 pin magnetic data cable is a complete cable assembly rather than an individual magnetic connector. The visible structure combines a compact molded cable head, a three-contact magnetic mating interface, cable conductors and a separate device-side mating component.

The three electrical contacts are assigned according to the approved Pin Map. They may be allocated to data, signal, power, return, detection or control functions according to the project, but the pin count alone does not establish a specific protocol or data rate.

Magnetic structures assist capture and retention during mating. Final position, alignment and seating should be controlled by the connector housings and mechanical mating geometry, while the pogo contacts provide electrical connection and controlled Z-axis compliance.

Three-Contact Magnetic Interface

The product uses three electrical contact positions in a compact linear arrangement. The cable-side molded head has a recessed mating face, while the product image also shows a separate device-side mating component with corresponding pogo pin contacts.

The exact Pin 1 location, viewing direction and electrical allocation must be shown on the approved drawing. Mirrored viewing directions between the cable side and device side can create wiring errors if the Pin Map is not defined from a consistent reference direction.

Male and female terminology should not be assumed from appearance. For engineering documentation, CTP recommends identifying the interfaces as the cable-side magnetic interface and the device-side mating component unless the approved drawing defines another naming convention.

Pin Map and Data Channel Design

This product is intended for data-interface applications, but three contacts do not define one universal data architecture.

The project should identify the function of every contact, including data, signal return, power, ground, detection, identification or control where applicable.

Supported data protocol and data rate must be evaluated through the complete electrical channel, including:

  • Pin Map and signal assignment
  • Signal return path
  • Contact geometry and pitch
  • Device-side PCB transition
  • Cable conductor arrangement
  • Cable length and shielding where required
  • Source and receiving electronics

A three-pin magnetic interface should therefore not be described as supporting a specific USB, UART, I²C or other protocol unless the complete system has been designed and validated for that function.

Magnetic Capture, Retention and Mechanical Seating

The magnetic structure assists the two mating components during approach and helps retain the interface after engagement.

Magnetic capture, retention, separation and peel behavior are different mechanical conditions and should be specified according to the actual device structure. A stronger magnetic force is not automatically a better design.

Final connector position and alignment should be controlled by the mating housing, mechanical datums, guides and seating surfaces. Magnetic attraction alone should not be used to define final contact compression.

Working Stroke and Mating Tolerance

The spring-loaded contacts require an approved working stroke after the cable head and device-side mating component reach their intended seated position.

Working stroke should be distinguished from total mechanical travel. The recommended operating compression must consider housing tolerances, PCB position, contact height, mating-surface variation and the final mechanical stack-up.

Pogo pins should provide electrical contact and controlled compliance rather than function as the primary mechanical stop.

Cable Construction and Opposite-End Termination

The magnetic connector head is only one part of the cable assembly. Cable length, conductor count, conductor gauge, shielding, outer jacket, flexibility and strain-relief structure should be defined together with the device requirements.

The opposite end of the cable may use a project-specific termination, but the exact interface should be confirmed before the product is described as USB-A, USB-C, DC, terminal, bare wire or another standard connection.

Cable routing and repeated bending conditions should also be included in the project requirements when the cable operates in a moving or frequently handled application.

Electrical Path and Power Functions

If one or more of the three contacts are also used for power delivery, current capability must be evaluated through the complete conductive path.
